To keep accurate battle with the enemy, you can not just shoot quickly, but is easy to maneuver and move in space. The green bar indicates how many shots opponents can make your plane, until its destruction. So if you see that in your side flying projectiles drastically change the flight path, then the projectile will fly by and you'll save yourself a unit of life.
