In India, it is customary to welcome the arrival of spring with big celebrations, and the most important of them is Holi or the festival of colors. The holiday lasts three days, on the first day a huge effigy or decorated tree is burned. This symbolizes the burning of the demoness Holika. On the other two days, people sprinkle each other with colored powder, water and smear with mud. Everyone walks around dirty, contented and happy.
